Please consider the scultpures presented here, not as abstract works of art, but rather as portraits of the mineral world made out of their own material.

I approach each stone with the desire to reveal for the viewer the stone’s intrinsic beauty — the natural form, the surface texture, the weathered patina or the brilliance offered when a stone’s polished window is revealed.

Rather than dominate the material by imposing my imagery on the stone, I allow an artistic collaboration between myself and the material to determine the artistic outcome. Approached in this way, the stones become great teachers, and some of their lessons come very hard and in their own sweet time.

I sincerely hope that you enjoy my sculputal collaboration with our elemental Earth.

- Michael Jacobsen

“If you’re truly collaborating with the stone, it’s a dance between the two, the stone and yourself. Sometimes there is a battle of wills between what the stone wants to do and what you want to do.”
